Reception Curriculum Rationale

Who are our children?

Children arrive at Canada Hill having experienced very different journeys before starting school. They bring with them their own interests, experiences and personalities, alongside different levels of confidence and independence. Some settle quickly into new routines whilst others need more time to feel secure in a new environment.

For this reason, relationships come first. We invest time in getting to know every child and every family through home visits, Teddy Bears' Picnics, settling sessions and opportunities for parents to spend time in the classroom before September. These experiences help children feel that they belong whilst also giving us valuable insight into each child's starting point. This means that learning begins with the children in front of us, building on what they already know, can do and are interested in.

What has informed our curriculum?

Our curriculum has been shaped by current research into child development and effective early years practice, including the pedagogical principles championed by Early Excellence, alongside the professional knowledge and experience of our own staff team.

We know that young children learn through meaningful experiences and high-quality interactions. We recognise that language underpins all learning and that children need opportunities to revisit ideas if understanding is to become secure. Play provides a powerful context for applying new learning and making sense of the world around them.

Our curriculum is never considered finished. We continue to reflect on current research, evaluate our practice and engage with evidence-informed projects that strengthen our understanding of child development and communication. As our children change, our curriculum continues to evolve with them.

How have we designed the curriculum?

When designing our curriculum, we first considered what children need to know and be able to do in order to make a successful transition into Year 1. We then worked backwards to map the knowledge, skills and experiences needed across the Reception year, ensuring that learning builds progressively over time.

This progression is set out within our long-term skills document and provides a clear sequence for learning. Robust assessment is closely linked to this progression and enables us to identify the knowledge and skills that need further development across the cohort as well as the next steps for individual children. This information shapes future planning and informs interventions where appropriate, ensuring that every child is supported to make progress from their own starting point.

Our curriculum is continually refined through ongoing observation and professional discussion. Staff meet regularly to reflect on the learning they have seen within the provision, considering the skills that children are demonstrating alongside the interests that are emerging through their play. These discussions help us identify the vocabulary, experiences and enhancements that will move learning forwards whilst maintaining a clear focus on our long-term progression. In this way, the curriculum remains engaging, responsive and meaningful without ever losing sight of the knowledge and skills that children need before moving into Year 1.

How is the curriculum implemented?

Our curriculum is brought to life through carefully chosen pedagogical approaches that reflect our understanding of how young children learn best. High-quality interactions, purposeful play and direct teaching work together to ensure that children develop new knowledge whilst having opportunities to revisit and apply their learning in meaningful contexts.

Oracy and vocabulary underpin every aspect of our curriculum. Vocabulary development happens through three carefully considered approaches. Each half term, we identify ten core vocabulary words linked to our key learning. These words are explicitly introduced to children, displayed at adult eye level and revisited through direct teaching, provision, routines and interactions. Adults model vocabulary within meaningful contexts and support children to use new language within their own conversations and play. Alongside this, Drawing Club introduces eight ambitious words each week linked to carefully selected texts. Adults also remain responsive, introducing precise vocabulary naturally through high-quality interactions based on children’s discoveries.

Children regularly work with partners and in small groups where they are encouraged to share ideas, explain their thinking and justify their opinions. By the end of Reception, we want children to confidently say, “I agree because…” or “I disagree because…” before explaining their reasoning with increasing independence. We believe that learning to listen carefully, respond thoughtfully and articulate ideas clearly provides a strong foundation for future learning across the curriculum.

What do we want children to leave with?

By the end of Reception, children should be well prepared for the transition into Year 1, having developed the knowledge and skills that provide the foundation for future learning. They should be able to communicate their ideas with growing confidence, listen to the views of others and explain their thinking with increasing independence.

We hope that children leave Reception with a sense of curiosity about the world around them and the confidence to tackle new challenges. They should enjoy asking questions, persevere when things feel difficult and take pride in their achievements.

Above all, we want children to leave Reception embodying the values of Canada Hill Primary School. We want them to be happy and inquisitive learners who are determined to succeed, reflective in their thinking and compassionate towards others. We hope they leave Reception with the confidence to embrace the next stage of their education and a genuine love of learning.
