Intent
At Canada Hill Primary School, we inspire children to become curious, thoughtful historians who develop a deep understanding of Britain's past and the wider world. Through rich, knowledge-based learning and purposeful enquiry, pupils explore how societies have changed over time, appreciate the diversity of human experience, and understand how the past shapes our lives today. We make meaningful links to our local heritage in Newton Abbot and the surrounding area, alongside national and global history, enabling children to develop a strong sense of identity and belonging. Our ambitious curriculum equips pupils with the knowledge, vocabulary and disciplinary skills to question, investigate, interpret evidence and think critically, fostering a lifelong love of history and preparing them to become informed, responsible citizens.
Implementation
At Canada Hill Primary School, our history curriculum is implemented through engaging, carefully sequenced lessons that help children develop a secure understanding of the past. We use a range of teaching techniques to capture pupils’ interest and make history meaningful, memorable and accessible for all learners.
Teachers use a wide range of engaging teaching strategies, including historical enquiry, source analysis, artefact handling, storytelling, discussion, debate, role play, timelines and the use of historical photographs and primary sources. Through our use of Key Stage History resources, pupils are encouraged to ask thoughtful questions, investigate and evaluate evidence, compare different interpretations of the past and explain their thinking using historical vocabulary. Lessons provide opportunities for children to work independently, collaboratively and through practical activities, developing both their historical knowledge and disciplinary skills as young historians.
Wherever possible, history is brought to life through the use of artefacts, historical photographs, enquiry-based activities and immersive learning experiences. Children are encouraged to think like historians by asking questions, exploring evidence, making comparisons and considering different viewpoints.
Our curriculum is carefully planned to make strong links with Newton Abbot and the surrounding area, helping pupils understand the rich history of their local community alongside significant national and global events. Educational visits, including to Compton Castle, Kents Cavern and Newton Abbot Town and GWR Museum, provide valuable opportunities for children to experience history first-hand and deepen their understanding beyond the classroom.
Teachers use high-quality resources, including Key Stage History, to support planning and delivery. Lessons are designed to build pupils' substantive knowledge, disciplinary knowledge, historical vocabulary and chronological understanding over time, ensuring that prior learning is revisited and built upon as children progress through the school.
Through this ambitious and engaging approach, pupils at Canada Hill Primary School develop curiosity, confidence and enthusiasm for history. They leave primary school with a secure understanding of Britain's past and the wider world, an appreciation of their local heritage, and the ability to think critically about how the past continues to shape the present.
Impact
By the end of Year 6, pupils at Canada Hill Primary School have developed a secure chronological understanding of British and world history and can confidently place significant events, civilisations and historical periods within a wider historical context. They understand how the past has shaped the present and recognise the impact that historical events and individuals continue to have on society today.
Pupils demonstrate the knowledge, vocabulary and disciplinary skills of young historians. They can ask thoughtful historical questions, analyse and evaluate a range of primary and secondary sources, recognise that historical interpretations may differ, and use evidence to justify their opinions and conclusions.
Children make meaningful links between local, national and global history, showing an appreciation of the rich heritage of Newton Abbot and the surrounding area alongside significant events from Britain's past and the wider world. They can compare different societies, identify similarities and differences across time periods, and explain causes, consequences, change and continuity.
Pupils communicate their historical understanding confidently through discussion, debate and a range of written outcomes, using appropriate historical vocabulary with increasing accuracy and precision.
The impact of our history curriculum is evident through pupils' enthusiasm for the subject, the quality of their discussions and written work, and their ability to recall and apply historical knowledge over time. Teachers assess pupils' understanding through ongoing formative assessment, retrieval practice, pupil voice, questioning and outcomes in books, ensuring that learning is secure and that any misconceptions are addressed promptly.
By the time pupils leave Canada Hill Primary School, they are curious, knowledgeable and reflective historians who have developed a lifelong interest in the past. They are equipped with the critical thinking skills, historical knowledge and understanding needed to become informed citizens who appreciate the diversity of human experience and understand how history continues to influence the world around them.
