The Canada Hill Curriculum

A curriculum designed to help children know more, remember more and understand more

At Canada Hill Primary School, our curriculum is designed to give every pupil the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to succeed in school and beyond.

We have developed a knowledge-rich, ambitious and carefully sequenced curriculum which builds progressively from Reception to Year 6. We identify the important knowledge, vocabulary and subject-specific skills that pupils need to learn, deliberately revisit this learning and provide opportunities for pupils to apply it in increasingly sophisticated ways.

We believe that children are better able to think deeply, make connections and solve problems when they have a secure foundation of knowledge. Our curriculum therefore places the acquisition and retention of important knowledge at its heart. As pupils' knowledge grows, so does their ability to reason, analyse, evaluate, explain, create and apply what they have learned.

Our curriculum is not a collection of individual lessons or topics. It is a carefully planned journey. Learning builds on what pupils already know, important concepts and vocabulary are revisited over time, and teachers identify the knowledge and skills pupils need to secure at each stage of their education.

We are ambitious for every child. Pupils are taught alongside their peers wherever possible, with appropriate support and challenge so that all children can access an ambitious curriculum. We adapt teaching to meet pupils' needs without lowering our expectations of what they can achieve.

We also recognise that children are growing up in Newton Abbot, Ogwell and the wider world. Our curriculum makes purposeful use of our local area while ensuring that pupils develop a broad understanding of the wider national and global context. Through our subjects and wider experiences, children encounter significant people, places, cultures, beliefs, ideas and events, helping them to develop the knowledge and cultural understanding they need to participate confidently in society.

Learning at Canada Hill also extends beyond individual subjects. Through our Personal Development Journey, assemblies, enrichment, visitors, trips, pupil leadership and wider school life, pupils have opportunities to apply their learning, reflect on their experiences and consider their responsibilities to themselves, others and the wider world.

Our aim is that pupils leave Canada Hill knowledgeable, curious, reflective, resilient and responsible, with the strong foundations they need for the next stage of their education and for life beyond school.
